The Full Circle at Sherwood Montessori

Spring 2016 -- Edible Shasta-Butte Magazine

At Sherwood Montessori Charter School, located in a quiet west Chico neighborhood near Bidwell Park, smiling kindergartners and middle schoolers work side by side, digging their hands deep into beds of lettuce, snap peas, and herbs.

In support of a hands-on curriculum, this K-8 public charter school is giving students the opportunity to know their food as intimately as their traditional school subjects. The school and garden have been featured in newspapers, won a salsa competition, and were recognized as part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Chefs Move to Schools!” initiative and Partnership for a Healthier America (part of the national “Let’s Move!” campaign). Hi. My name is Richie. Some kids call me Chef Richie. I’m a chef. But I’m not a chef. I run a school garden-kitchen program and I’m the school’s head gardener. But I’m not a gardener. I’m a teacher. I teach. When I leave my house each morning, I don’t think or say I’m going to work. I think and say, “I’m going to school”. And if you ask me, I have the best job in the world. My students/employees/co-workers are ages 4-14. If you work with adults all day every day, I’m feeling really sorry for you right now. Actually, I’m feeling a little sorry for the old me. Sherwood's Poetry 99 Winners, spring 2016

April 2016 -- The Chico News & Reivew's Poetry 99 contest winners were announced and once again, Sherwood kids were among the winners. Congratulations to: 1st Place: Isa Anderson, and 2nd Place: Cedar Bailey. Honorable mentions to: Savanah Cresswell, Isa Anderson, Clover Bailey, and Cedar Bailey.

In the Middle School we had current and former Sherwood poets honored for their talents:

1st Place: Thea Oldfield and 3rd Place: Collin Bailey.

Honorable mentions to: Zin Pollock-Dowd, Mario Giannini and Judah Fairchild.

In the 2015 Best of Chico Readers' Pick awards, our very own Carin Anderson was recognized with a 3rd place finish in the Best Teacher category.  We agree she's pretty amazing!

Once again, under the guidance of Danielle Mennucci, our students' writing was recognized for excellence.  Sherwood's Fiction 59 winners in Middle School are:

1st place Madelyn Elliott, 2nd place Collin Bailey (sherwood alumni), 3rd place is Thea Oldfield, and an Honorable mention goes to Griffin Renzi.

In upper Elementary the winners are First and Second place Cedar Bailey and honorable mentions go to Axel Baker, Savannah Cresswell, Nina Westerdahl, Aly Steveson, and Kaiya Struyf. We also have a talented writer in our parent community that was recognized: Asher Casey's mom Sadie Casey won first place in the adult division!
