Meet Our Teachers
Teresa Shippen teaches our Kindergarten classroom. Teresa began her teaching career in Live Oak, California working at a three room school out in the orchards. She taught 3-4th grades for eight years, and loved being a part of the community of Live Oak. Teresa left this job to be a stay-at-home mom for her two young children. During the thirteen years that she stayed home she had a third child. Jacob, her oldest, currently attends Chico State and will be graduating this Spring (2016). Jessica is currently a sophomore at the University of Oregon in Eugene and Peter, her youngest is currently 13. Teresa began her path back into teaching Kindergarten at Chico Montessori, a then private school in town. Her Montessori training was a great fit for the way she felt education should be.
Carin Anderson teaches one of our three Lower Elementary (1/2/3) classrooms. Carin began teaching in 2000 in the Oakland public schools. After 4 years of teaching in the bay area, she took time off to do human rights work in Colombia, and then to be a fulltime mother during her daughter Isa’s first five years. Carin was completely converted to Montessori philosophy and education during her time off from teaching, and joined Sherwood when the school opened. She is especially drawn to Montessori’s emphasis on Peace Education and the importance of intercultural understanding and experience. Carin holds an MA in Education from U.C. Berkeley, a Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential, a Montessori Early Childhood credential, and has almost completed her Montessori Lower Elementary Credential. This is her 6th year teaching at Sherwood.
Please note: Carin is spending a year overseas (2016-17) teaching in a Quaker-run school that serves Palestinian families. We will miss Carin terribly but are proud to support her as she pursues this endeavor. We wish her and her daughter a safe and fulfilling journey, and will hold them in our hearts until they return to Chico with stories to share of their travels.
Emily Barrett has accepted the teaching position for Carin's lower elementary classroom for the time Carin is teaching overseas. Emily has experience as a teacher, she comes with stellar recommendations, and the hiring committee felt she was a natural fit for our community. Emily has been trained as a Nurtured Heart Approach trainer and has agreed to help our staff integrate this approach to guidance and discipline in our Montessori school. We couldn't be happier with Emily's decision to join us and are looking forward to all of you getting to know her as well.
